Prestige Imports Releases Auto Theft Prevention Tips

Denver, Colorado, January 17, 2010 - Prestige Imports Collision Repair Center today released a public service announcement with recommendations to help prevent area motorists from becoming a victim of car theft. According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation there were nearly 13,000 motor vehicle thefts reported in the state in 2008. That figure was down approximately 20% from the prior year.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and law enforcement agencies recommend a multi-faceted approach to deterring automobile theft. Among the recommendations are:
1) Apply Common Sense: Among the more obvious recommendations are to park in well-lit areas and remain aware of surroundings. Report any suspicious or unusual activity to law enforcement. It’s surprising to known how many cars are stolen because keys are left in the vehicle. Be sure to secure entrance to your automobile by raising windows and locking the doors upon exiting. Items within the car should be removed or hidden from view.
2) Anti-Theft Devices: Steering wheel locks or other anti-theft systems can be effective in deterring theft. Car thieves are more likely to target vehicles that present the fewest theft deterrents. Some car owners might decide to display a sticker that warns thieves of the presence of anti-theft systems regardless of whether such a system is actually installed.
3) Vehicle Immobilizers: Some car owners may utilize technologies such as smart keys and kill-switch devices that effectively disable a stolen car and make it a less appealing target to car thieves. Manufacturers of such systems can provide additional information about the relative advantages of such systems and recommend which system might be appropriate for a given vehicle.
4) Tracking Systems: GPS systems that transmit vehicle locations can also be useful in tracking down stolen automobiles. The use of location based technologies can provide police or monitoring services with a means to recover stolen automobiles.
5) Avoid Carjacking: To reduce the possibility of carjacking drive with the windows up and doors locked. Be aware of your surroundings. When stopped at a traffic light it’s a good idea to leave enough space between your car the car ahead to be able to drive away if approached. When approaching your parked automobile don’t enter it if someone is observed loitering nearby.
