1) Be informed about replacement parts. Some insurance companies may permit repair shops to use less expensive generic replacement parts instead of higher quality original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts that match your vehicle exactly and cost more. Consult your repair shop on their policies and clarify your preferences concerning use of OEM parts.
2) Do you have a European car? If so, the repair shop you use should preferably have earned a special certification from the car manufacturer, which includes specialized equipment to fix your vehicle’s aluminum and hard steel parts. A manufacturer’s certifications means the auto body or collision repair facility has met strict quality and training requirements that ensure your automobile will be repaired according to manufacturers’ high standards.
3) Make your approval a requirement. Especially when you’re responsible for the repair costs, politely establish with the shop that no work should occur until you’ve authorized it. Once the repairs are complete, review the invoice carefully to make sure everything matches up with repairs you’ve authorized. If it doesn’t, bring it to the facility’s manager.
